AI Weather Forecasts Boost Crop Decisions For 38 Million Farmers

Google Research and the University of Chicago teamed up to give 38 million farmers in India more accurate weather predictions this summer.

Using NeuralGCM, an AI weather model that combines physics with decades of climate data, researchers could forecast the start of the monsoon season up to a month in advance.

These AI forecasts were shared directly with farmers through SMS, helping them make smarter choices about when to plant, buy seeds, or wait out a dry spell.

Unlike traditional models that require supercomputers, NeuralGCM can even run on a laptop, making high-quality climate forecasting more accessible.

The project showed major real-world impact, with farmers able to adjust their planting strategies to match delayed rainfall.

University of Chicago research found that advanced weather forecasts can nearly double annual income for farmers by aligning decisions with climate conditions.

This initiative, supported by India’s Ministry of Agriculture, highlights how AI in agriculture can improve food security, increase resilience, and boost farmer incomes across regions that depend heavily on monsoon timing.
