Anthropic has announced its support for California’s SB 53, a new bill aimed at regulating frontier AI developers by requiring greater transparency and accountability.

The bill would require large companies building powerful AI systems to publish safety frameworks, release risk assessment reports, and disclose critical safety incidents within 15 days.

It also establishes whistleblower protections, ensuring that violations and risks to public safety are reported and addressed.

According to Anthropic, many of these practices, such as publishing responsible scaling policies and documenting model capabilities, are already followed by frontier labs, including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Microsoft.

However, SB 53 would make these measures legally binding across the industry.

The company emphasized that while AI governance should ultimately be addressed at the federal level, California’s bill provides a strong foundation for managing risks and ensuring consistent safety standards.
