Google Unveils First Real Quantum Advantage With Willow Chip

Google officially put history into motion when it launched its Quantum Echoes algorithm, achieving the first-ever verifiable quantum advantage on real hardware.
Running on Google’s Sycamore quantum chip, this milestone enables quantum computers to perform complex calculations, such as finding molecular structures,13,000 times more quickly than the planet’s top supercomputers.
This milestone brings quantum computing out of the lab and into the real world of medicine, chemistry, and materials science applications.
According to Google Quantum AI, the Quantum Echoes algorithm shows that quantum computers can now generate reproducible, verifiable results, a significant step towards large-scale quantum systems.
In a joint effort with UC Berkeley, scientists were able to successfully model molecules with 15 and 28 atoms, validating against Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) data.
This validation suggests quantum systems could soon act as “quantum-scopes,” helping scientists map molecular interactions on an atomic level.
Google now plans to transition to Milestone 3 in its roadmap, which involves developing a long-lived logical qubit, the foundation for future large-scale, error-corrected quantum computing.
