Google Unveils Gemini CLI, a Free AI Coding Tool for Developers

On June 25, 2025, Google introduced Gemini CLI, a free open-source AI agent that brings Gemini 2.5 Pro’s capabilities to developers’ terminals on Mac, Windows, and Linux.
It supports coding, debugging, and file management with a 1 million token context window, allowing natural language queries for complex codebases, according to Google’s announcement.
The tool’s free tier, accessible with a Google account, permits 60 requests per minute and 1,000 per day, surpassing competitors like OpenAI’s Codex CLI in accessibility, industry sources note.
Licensed under Apache 2.0, Gemini CLI’s GitHub codebase welcomes community contributions. Developers can integrate it with Model Context Protocol (MCP) for custom workflows.
