In a landmark public-private collaboration, Google is partnering with nuclear technology company Kairos Power and the Tennessee Valley Authority to deploy its first advanced nuclear reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
This project is part of a larger effort to meet the growing electricity demands of Google’s data centers, particularly those supporting its artificial intelligence operations.
The initiative will begin in 2030 and power data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama, with clean, round-the-clock energy.
This agreement marks the first time a U.S. utility has signed a power purchase agreement for electricity from a fourth-generation nuclear reactor.
By procuring power from the Hermes 2 plant, Google aims to secure a stable energy supply and accelerate the development and commercialization of new nuclear technologies.
The project is also expected to help re-establish Oak Ridge as a nuclear innovation hub, creating high-paying jobs and educational opportunities through partnerships with local universities
