GPT-OSS: An Open Model With o4 Mini Capabilities

robot on a futuristic table

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has introduced GPT-OSS, a new open‑weight model that anyone can download under an Apache 2.0 license, including for commercial use, starting today.

These text-only models outperform or match OpenAI’s proprietary o3-mini and o4-mini on benchmark reasoning tasks and are optimized to run locally on high-end laptops or a single NVIDIA GPU, keeping data private and giving everyone model control.

The smaller 20B model, specifically, is designed to operate on devices with as little as 16 GB of RAM, making advanced AI accessible to developers and researchers without enterprise hardware.

OpenAI enabled features like chain-of-thought reasoning, tool use, and offline code execution, while conducting internal misuse testing and expert reviews to safeguard safety.

This release marks their first truly open-model offering since GPT‑2, signaling a major strategic shift in favor of transparency and distributed innovation.
