Meta has broken ground on a new AI-dedicated data center in El Paso, Texas, its 29th in the world and third in the state.
The cutting-edge facility is designed to achieve up to 1 gigawatt (GW) and will play a key role in servicing Meta’s growing AI workloads, including model training and inference.
The project is a $1.5 billion investment that will create approximately 1,800 construction jobs at peak and 100 permanent operational jobs upon completion.
The new data center is being developed with flexibility, sustainability, and efficiency in mind to support emerging AI technologies.
It will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure that can accommodate current and future generations of AI hardware.
Meta is aiming for LEED Gold certification for the facility and will utilize a closed-loop cooling system that uses virtually no water for most of the year.
The company aims to achieve water positivity by 2030, restoring 200% of the water the data center consumes to local watersheds in collaboration with DigDeep and the Texas Water Action Collaborative.
The energy usage of the data center will be matched with 100% renewable energy, supported by new grid infrastructure through El Paso Electric.
Along with technology, Meta is also investing in the community through programs like the Community Accelerator that helps small businesses utilize AI tools and Community Action Grants that will start next year.
The El Paso data center reinforces Meta’s commitment to developing AI infrastructure responsibly while supporting economic development and sustainability in Texas.
