Microsoft Brings Agent Mode To Office with Copilot

Microsoft announced the rollout of Agent Mode in Excel and Word, alongside Office Agent in Copilot chat, marking a major step toward AI-driven productivity.

Inspired by vibe coding, Agent Mode enables users to work iteratively with Copilot as it orchestrates multi-step tasks in documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

In Excel, Agent Mode “speaks Excel” natively—handling formulas, creating data visualizations, and validating results until outputs are accurate.

In Word, Agent Mode transforms writing into a conversational process, enabling users to draft, refine, and style documents more interactively. PowerPoint support is also on the way.

Office Agent brings this power directly into Copilot chat, creating polished presentations and documents from a single prompt.

It can clarify intent, research topics, generate slides, and refine outputs with users in real time.

Early prompts range from building financial models and personal budgets in Excel to updating monthly reports in Word to generating full business plans and social media trend reports in PowerPoint.

The features are available today in the Frontier program for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers and subscribers, with desktop support coming soon.

This update represents Microsoft’s broader push to redefine human-AI collaboration in everyday work.
