SpaceX Starship Explodes During Tenth Flight Test at Starbase

On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at approximately 11 p.m. CT, SpaceX’s Starship suffered a dramatic explosion during a static fire test at its Starbase facility in Texas, just hours before it was slated for its tenth flight test.

The incident, which sent shockwaves through the aerospace community and lit up social media with footage of the blast, involved the vehicle designated for the upcoming mission and marked another challenging moment in the program’s development.

SpaceX quickly confirmed via X that a safety perimeter had been established, ensuring all personnel were accounted for and safe, with no immediate hazards reported to residents in surrounding communities.

The Starbase team, working in close coordination with local officials from Cameron County, is now focused on securing the test site and the immediate surrounding areas, urging the public to avoid the location as they conduct these critical operations.

This explosion adds to a series of setbacks for Starship, including a prototype failure over the Indian Ocean on May 27, 2025, and earlier test flights that ended in disintegration over the Caribbean and Florida.

SpaceX’s signature “fail fast, learn fast” approach, which has propelled the company to the forefront of commercial spaceflight, is once again being put to the test as engineers prepare to dissect the incident to identify causes and enhance future designs.

The Federal Aviation Administration, already engaged in investigations following recent Starship mishaps, will need to approve the next launch, adding another layer of scrutiny to the timeline.

With Elon Musk setting an ambitious goal of launching Starship every three to four weeks—a target outlined after the ninth flight test in March 2025—this event underscores the high stakes of the company’s Mars colonization vision.

Local authorities, drawing on their experience managing past incidents at Starbase, are supporting the cleanup efforts, while the global space community watches closely, eager to see how SpaceX turns this latest challenge into a stepping stone for progress.
