Tinder Requires Face Check for New California Users

Starting June 30, 2025, Tinder mandates new California users verify profiles via Face Check, a facial recognition feature, Axios reports.
Using FaceTec, users submit a video selfie to confirm identity, match profile photos, and prevent duplicate accounts. Verified users get a badge; the video is deleted, but an encrypted face map is retained to block fraud.
Tested in Colombia and Canada, California was chosen for its large user base and strict safety laws. Match Group, Tinder’s parent company, aims to enhance safety despite recent criticism for mishandling misconduct reports.
Facing declining users and revenue, alongside Bumble, Tinder uses Face Check to reduce impersonation. If successful, the feature may expand nationwide.
