OpenAI has released the largest study on consumer ChatGPT usage, offering a detailed look at how the technology is being adopted and creating economic value.

Conducted with Harvard economist David Deming and published as an NBER working paper, the study analyzed 1.5 million anonymized conversations.

With ChatGPT now serving over 700 million weekly active users, the findings reveal how this widely democratized tool shapes personal and professional life.

The research shows that adoption has broadened far beyond early user groups. Gender gaps have narrowed significantly, with women now representing more than half of identified users.

Growth is particularly strong in low- and middle-income countries, where adoption rates are outpacing wealthier regions by more than four times.

This reflects ChatGPT’s role as a globally accessible guidance, productivity, and creativity tool.

Most conversations focus on everyday tasks: about half involve “Asking” for advice or information, while 40% center on “Doing” tasks like drafting text, planning, or coding.

A smaller portion, 11%, is focused on “Expressing” through reflection and play.

Roughly 30% of usage is work-related and 70% personal, underscoring ChatGPT’s dual role in boosting productivity and supporting daily life.

ChatGPT is driving value that extends beyond traditional economic measures by improving decision-making, saving time, and enhancing knowledge work.

The study highlights how AI is becoming a work tool and an integral part of everyday living.
