Samsung and SK Partner With OpenAI On Stargate AI Infrastructure

Samsung and SK hynix have joined OpenAI’s Stargate initiative, a global AI infrastructure program designed to expand computing capacity and accelerate the development of next-generation AI models.

The announcement followed a high-profile meeting in Seoul between South Korea’s President Lee Jae-myung, Samsung Chairman Jay Y. Lee, SK Chairman Chey Tae-won, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

Under the partnership, Samsung and SK will scale up advanced memory chip production, targeting 900,000 DRAM wafer starts per month, and collaborate with OpenAI on new AI data centers in Korea, positioning the country as a global AI hub.

Alongside chip production, OpenAI signed agreements with Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT to explore data center projects outside Seoul to boost regional growth and jobs.

SK Telecom will also partner with OpenAI on a potential AI data center, while Samsung affiliates, including Samsung C&T, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Samsung SDS, will assess additional infrastructure opportunities.

Both Samsung and SK plan to integrate ChatGPT Enterprise and API tools into their operations, supporting productivity and innovation.

OpenAI’s Sam Altman said Korea has “all the ingredients to be a global leader in AI,” while SK Chairman Chey Tae-won called the Stargate partnership a “landmark moment” for global AI infrastructure innovation.
