Coca-Cola HBC has begun rolling out a first-of-its-kind sustainable packaging solution in Austria aimed at reducing plastic waste in its supply chain.
Developed in partnership with DS Smith and Krones, the new Lift Up handle is a fully recyclable corrugated cardboard alternative designed to replace the plastic shrink wrap typically used on 1.5-liter multipacks.
This seemingly simple change addresses a significant environmental issue by eliminating single-use plastics derived from fossil fuels, which contribute to pollution and climate change.
The company estimates that this initiative alone will remove approximately 200 metric tons of plastic from circulation each year.
Beyond reducing material waste, the switch to fiber-based packaging also helps lower carbon emissions associated with manufacturing and distribution.
Coca-Cola HBC has also introduced a recyclable paper label to minimize further plastic usage, aligning with its broader goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2040.
While fiber-based solutions still have an environmental footprint, the shift represents a meaningful step toward more circular and sustainable packaging practices.
Key Takeaways:
- The Lift Up cardboard handle replaces plastic shrink wrap on multipacks.
- This change is expected to remove 200 metric tons of plastic annually.
- The pilot program is currently underway in the Austrian market.
