Samsung Electronics announced that its SmartThings platform has become the first in the industry to support Matter 1.5, the latest global smart home standard that now includes camera compatibility.
The update, set to begin rolling out later this month, will enable users to integrate Matter-certified security cameras and video doorbells directly into the ecosystem alongside existing supported devices like lights and locks.
This development follows the Connectivity Standards Alliance’s release of the Matter 1.5 specification in November.
The integration standardizes essential camera functionalities, including live video streaming, two-way audio, motion detection, and pan-tilt-zoom controls, eliminating the need for manufacturers to build custom APIs for the SmartThings platform.
Samsung has confirmed active collaborations with major IoT device makers, including Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam, to utilize this new standard.
While platform support begins immediately, the first wave of physical Matter-native cameras from these partners is expected to hit the market in March 2026.
This expansion aligns with Samsung’s open-platform strategy, aimed at unifying disparate smart home protocols under a single interface.
By adopting the standard early, the company allows consumers to mix and match camera brands for security monitoring and automation routines without relying on proprietary connection methods.
