Anthropic announced that Mariano-Florentino “Tino” Cuéllar had joined its Long-Term Benefit Trust, an independent governance body created to support the company’s public benefit mandate.

Cuéllar is the president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a former justice of the Supreme Court of California.

Anthropic said he would step down from Carnegie in July 2026 and return to Stanford University, where he will lead the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and the Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program.

Anthropic said Cuéllar brought experience across law, international affairs, and technology governance, including service in three U.S. presidential administrations and leadership roles in philanthropy and academic institutions.

His work has focused on how technology intersects with public institutions, regulation, and democratic systems.

The Trust also said Kanika Bahl and Zachary Robinson had completed their terms as Trustees. Both were founding members and helped establish the Trust’s role in Anthropic’s governance structure.

Why This Matters Today

If you track AI governance, the appointment highlighted Anthropic’s approach to oversight as AI systems grow more capable.

The Long-Term Benefit Trust oversees board selection and advises leadership on balancing innovation with public-interest considerations.

Cuéllar’s background signaled a focus beyond technical risk. His experience in law, geopolitics, and public institutions aligned with concerns about how advanced AI could affect national security, democratic governance, and global stability.

The transition also marked a generational shift within the Trust.

As founding members stepped aside, Anthropic refreshed the body tasked with guiding long-term decisions tied to safety and societal impact.
