OpenAI has introduced new parental controls in ChatGPT, now available to all users.
Parents can link their account with their teen’s account, giving them the ability to manage settings such as quiet hours, voice mode, image generation, and memory.
Linked teen accounts also receive stronger safeguards by default, including filters for sensitive content, viral challenges, sexual or violent roleplay, and extreme beauty ideals.
Parents are notified if their teen unlinks the account, ensuring visibility and ongoing control.
In addition, OpenAI is rolling out notifications designed to alert parents in serious situations, such as when a teen may be at risk of self-harm.
These alerts are reviewed by trained staff, and in acute cases, parents will receive emails, texts, and push notifications, with law enforcement contacted if necessary.
A new parent resource page offers guidance on using ChatGPT safely at home.
Looking ahead, OpenAI is building an age prediction system to automatically apply teen-appropriate settings, further strengthening protections for younger users.
