OpenAI is piloting group chats in ChatGPT, a new feature that allows multiple people, and ChatGPT, to collaborate together in one shared conversation.
Whether you’re planning a trip, organizing a group project, brainstorming ideas, or settling debates, the new group chat feature makes it easier for teams, friends, and families to work together with ChatGPT as an active participant.
The assistant follows the flow of the conversation, responds when relevant, and can be mentioned directly when needed.
Group chats support file uploads, images, search, dictation, and image generation, and they’re powered by GPT-5.1 Auto.
Users can also customize how ChatGPT behaves within each group chat, adjust notifications, and manage participants.
The feature is rolling out first to users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan across Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.
Key Takeaways:
- Group chats let multiple people collaborate with ChatGPT in the same conversation.
- ChatGPT adapts socially, responding only when needed and following group context.
- The pilot is rolling out now to select regions on mobile and web.
