Cognition Acquires Windsurf to Strengthen AI Coding Platform

Cognition, creators of the Devin AI coding agent, acquired Windsurf, an AI startup specializing in agentic IDEs, on July 14, 2025.

The deal includes Windsurf’s intellectual property, products, employees, $82 million in annual revenue, and over 350 enterprise clients, including Dell and Zillow.

Following Google’s hire of Windsurf’s CEO and key researchers, Cognition will integrate Windsurf’s IDE with Devin to compete in the AI coding tools market.

Cognition restored Windsurf’s access to Anthropic’s Claude AI models and ensured all employees receive financial benefits with waived vesting cliffs.

The acquisition leverages Windsurf’s client base and technology to bolster Cognition’s position against competitors like Google and Microsoft in AI-driven software development.
