Google has announced significant upgrades to Google Translate, integrating its Gemini AI models to provide more accurate and contextual translations.
A key new feature allows the app better to understand nuances, idioms, and local expressions.
For example, instead of a literal word-for-word translation of idioms like “stealing my thunder,” the AI now parses the context to offer a meaning-based translation that makes sense in the target language.
This update is rolling out now in the U.S. and India for nearly 20 languages.
In addition to better text translation, Google is introducing a beta version of live speech-to-speech translation. This feature enables users to have real-time conversations where the AI translates spoken words directly into their headphones while preserving the speaker’s original tone and cadence.
The beta is available on Android in the U.S., Mexico, and India, supporting over 70 languages.
Google is also expanding its language learning tools, adding daily streak tracking and support for practicing new languages like German, Portuguese, and Swedish directly within the app.
Key Takeaways:
- Gemini AI now provides contextual translations for idioms and slang.
- A live speech-to-speech translation beta is available for headphones on Android.
- The app includes new language learning features and streak tracking.
