Instagram further revealed a significant overhaul to Teen Accounts, now set by default to PG-13 movie ratings.
Teens younger than 18 years of age will then be able to view content equivalent to what would be found in a PG-13 movie, providing them with an experience more suited to their age group across the platform.
Teens will be set automatically to the 13-plus content, and they cannot opt out without parental consent.
For even more control, Instagram is introducing a new “Limited Content” setting, which further censors content and hides comment visibility and interaction.
The update introduces stricter protections across accounts, search, recommendations, and AI engagement.
Teens won’t be able to follow or interact with accounts that repeatedly share adult or offensive material, and certain search terms and DMs will be filtered out entirely.
Instagram made these updates based on input from hundreds of thousands of parents worldwide, incorporating more than 3 million content ratings into its updated standards.
Teen Accounts in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada are beginning to receive the new PG-13 protections, with international rollout scheduled by year’s end.
