Intel Plans Handheld Gaming Platform With New Dedicated Chip

Intel said it is developing a handheld gaming platform that will include a dedicated chip designed for portable gaming devices.

The plan was discussed by Daniel Rogers, Intel vice president and general manager of PC products, during CES on Monday. The platform will combine hardware and software components.

The new platform will be based on Intel’s Core Series 3 “Panther Lake” processors.

Those processors were announced last year and are now rolling out across PCs. The chips are the first built on Intel’s 18A manufacturing process, which entered production in 2025.

Reporting from IGN, later confirmed by TechCrunch, stated that the platform will feature a chip tailored specifically for handheld gaming devices. Intel did not provide full specifications or product names.

Rogers said additional details will be shared later this year.

Intel has a long presence in gaming PCs and expanded further into the segment in 2022 with the launch of Intel Arc graphics cards.

The move into handheld systems would place Intel in a market currently led by AMD, whose processors power many portable consoles and PC-style handhelds.

Why This Matters Today

The announcement signals increased competition in handheld gaming hardware, a segment that has grown with devices built around AMD chips.

For you, this points to more choice in portable gaming systems and potentially different performance and battery trade-offs as more chipmakers enter the category.

It also shows Intel extending its 18A manufacturing process into consumer gaming devices, not just laptops and desktops.

That could influence how chip efficiency and graphics capabilities evolve in small, battery-powered form factors.

Our Key Takeaways:

  • Intel confirmed plans for a handheld gaming platform that includes a dedicated chip built on its Panther Lake Core Series 3 processors.

  • The company said more details on the handheld gaming products will arrive later this year, with reports from IGN confirmed by TechCrunch.

  • Intel’s move positions it to compete more directly in a handheld market currently dominated by AMD-based devices.
