Meta Pushes For Open Hardware To Power The Future Of AI

Meta leads open hardware as the platform for future AI data centers.

At the 2025 Open Compute Project Global Summit, Meta unveiled new hardware and networking technologies, including the Open Rack Wide (ORW) form factor and next-generation AI fabrics based on open-source specifications.

According to Meta, these technologies will make data centers more efficient, scalable, and sustainable as AI workloads expand.

The firm also introduced “Design for Sustainability,” a process to reduce hardware emissions through modular design, reuse, and lifecycle extensions.

Through collaborative engagement with industry competitors via the Open Data Center Initiative, Meta aims to standardize its infrastructure while retaining room for innovation.

Open-source hardware, it asserts, will be essential in meeting growing global demand for AI computing resources.
