Microsoft and OpenAI Sign New Agreement For The Future Of AGI

Microsoft and OpenAI have entered the next phase of their strategic partnership with a new long-term agreement that reshapes financial, product, and AI development rights between the companies.

Microsoft now holds an investment valued at approximately $135 billion in OpenAI Group PBC, representing roughly 27% ownership on a diluted basis.

The updated structure supports OpenAI’s move toward becoming a public benefit corporation, while preserving many of the original partnership terms that helped accelerate AI development over the past six years.

The new deal extends Microsoft’s exclusive rights to OpenAI’s frontier models and Azure API access until the arrival of AGI, which will now be confirmed by an independent expert panel.

OpenAI gains more flexibility to partner with others on certain products and serve customers across multiple cloud providers , including U.S. national security clients.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is now permitted to pursue AGI independently, even with third-party partners, while retaining major IP rights through at least 2032.

With new financial commitments and expanded innovation freedom on both sides, the companies say this updated partnership positions them to continue leading the global race toward safe and powerful artificial intelligence.
