Microsoft Research has launched the Crescent library, a new cryptographic toolkit designed to bring privacy to digital identity systems.
The library allows users to prove specific facts, like being over 18 or a state resident, without exposing unnecessary personal data.
This prevents tracking or cross-linking of identity information across different sessions and services.
The Crescent library can be applied to digital credentials such as mobile driver’s licenses, OpenID Connect tokens, and JSON Web Tokens.
By adding unlinkability to these identity systems, Microsoft aims to strengthen user privacy and security while allowing institutions and applications to verify important claims.
This development reflects a growing push in the tech world to create digital identity systems that balance trust, convenience, and user protection.
