Microsoft To Acquire Osmos For Fabric Data Automation

Microsoft announced the acquisition of Osmos on January 5, 2026.

Osmos is an AI-driven data engineering platform designed to automate the preparation and movement of data across systems. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Microsoft said Osmos will be integrated into Microsoft Fabric, its unified data and analytics platform that centers on OneLake.

Osmos uses autonomous AI agents to clean, map and transform raw data into formats suitable for analytics and AI workloads.

The company stated that customers are increasingly struggling with fragmented data and manual preparation processes.

By embedding Osmos into Fabric, Microsoft aims to reduce time spent on ETL tasks, extracting, transforming, and loading data, and shift focus toward analysis and model building.

Microsoft also confirmed that the Osmos team will join the Fabric engineering organization, where they will work on AI-powered data ingestion and preparation features across Fabric services.

Why This Matters Today

Data engineering remains one of the highest cost and time barriers to deploying AI systems at scale.

Automating schema mapping, cleaning, and transformation tasks could speed up how organizations turn operational data into analytics and AI inputs.

The acquisition also underscores Microsoft’s strategy of extending Fabric as an end-to-end data environment that unifies storage, governance, and analytics.

Adding agentic AI components aligns with Microsoft’s broader push toward AI copilots across infrastructure and productivity tools.
