OpenAI announced new steps toward improving safety for teens on ChatGPT, including developing long-term age prediction systems.
The goal is to tailor the experience based on whether users are under or over 18.
The system will automatically direct younger users to an age-appropriate version that blocks explicit content and, in rare emergencies, may involve law enforcement to ensure safety.
When age cannot be confirmed, the system will default to the under-18 experience, with adults given the option to verify their age to unlock full features.
Alongside this effort, OpenAI is rolling out parental controls by the end of the month.
These include account linking, teen-specific model behavior rules, feature management such as disabling memory and history, distress alerts, and blackout hours that restrict usage.
These updates aim to balance safety, privacy, and family guidance while ensuring ChatGPT responsibly supports both everyday interactions and more difficult situations.
