OpenAI is expanding data residency options worldwide, enabling over 1 million business customers to store their data locally and meet regional compliance and regulatory standards.
Organizations using ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu, or the API Platform can now opt to store their customer content at rest within specific geographies, ensuring greater control over privacy, security, and data governance.
This rollout reflects OpenAI’s push to support global enterprises that rely on AI for internal workflows and product development.
Data residency is now available across major regions, including the United States, Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, India, Australia, and the United Arab Emirates, with more locations planned soon.
Eligible customers can configure ChatGPT workspaces or API Projects to store conversations, uploads, custom GPTs, image generation outputs, and other customer content directly in their chosen region.
API requests for approved enterprise users are processed entirely in-region without storing model inputs or outputs on OpenAI’s servers.
These new controls build on OpenAI’s existing privacy and security framework. Business users benefit from AES-256 encryption, TLS 1.2+ transport security, optional Enterprise Key Management (EKM), and a strict policy of not training models on customer data unless the customer has explicitly opted in.
Full GDPR- and CCPA-aligned protections, SOC 2 Type 2 compliance, and a comprehensive Data Processing Addendum (DPA) further reinforce OpenAI’s commitment to enterprise-grade security.
