Reddit Sues To Overturn Australia Youth Social Media Ban

Reddit has launched a legal challenge against Australia’s new law, which bans children under 16 from accessing social media platforms.

The lawsuit filed in the High Court argues that the ban is invalid because it infringes on the implied freedom of political communication.

Reddit joins other major platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube in opposing the measure, which imposes fines of up to $45 million on companies that fail to enforce the age restriction.

The ban, which recently came into effect, requires platforms to block underage users through age verification methods such as age inference or estimation.

Reddit contends that the law raises serious concerns regarding user privacy and political expression for all internet users, not just minors.

This lawsuit marks the second High Court challenge to the legislation, following a separate case filed by two teenagers backed by a libertarian lawmaker

Key Takeaways:

  • Reddit argues the ban infringes on implied freedom of political communication.

  • Platforms face fines up to $45 million for failing to block users under 16.
