Shopify experienced a significant service disruption on Cyber Monday that prevented many merchants from logging into their admin accounts or using point-of-sale systems.
The outage peaked around 11:00 a.m. EST with thousands of reports flooding Downdetector just as retailers were managing one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
While customer-facing online storefronts largely remained operational, the backend issues left business owners unable to process in-store transactions or manage backend operations.
The company acknowledged the problem on its status page and later identified a failure in its login authentication flow as the root cause.
By mid-afternoon, Shopify stated that it had implemented a fix and was observing signs of recovery for both admin and POS access.
The timing of the outage was critical as Adobe Analytics projected U.S. Cyber Monday sales to reach $14.2 billion following a record-breaking Black Friday.
