SoftBank has officially exited its position in Nvidia, selling 32.1 million shares for $5.83 billion as part of a broader plan to fund its aggressive artificial intelligence investments.
The move, confirmed in the company’s latest earnings report, follows additional asset sales, including a $9.17 billion divestment of T-Mobile shares, as the Japanese tech giant doubles down on its “all in” strategy for AI.
According to SoftBank’s Chief Financial Officer Yoshimitsu Goto, the sale supports the company’s commitment to maintaining financial flexibility while financing its $22.5 billion investment in OpenAI.
Sources close to the matter told CNBC that the proceeds will also fund projects such as SoftBank’s acquisition of ABB’s robotics division and other AI-driven initiatives.
Despite completely offloading its Nvidia stake, analysts say the sale is not a bearish signal toward the chipmaker.
Instead, it reflects SoftBank’s need to free up capital for large-scale investments, including the $500 billion Stargate data center project in the U.S. SoftBank’s Vision Fund, which posted a $19 billion gain this quarter, remains heavily involved in the AI ecosystem, from chips to large language models.
Following its investment in OpenAI, SoftBank’s ownership stake in the ChatGPT maker will rise from 4% to 11%, with the potential to increase further in future funding rounds.
The company’s leadership maintains that the move is part of a long-term strategy to dominate the AI value chain rather than a retreat from its earlier tech holdings.
