EchoStar has agreed to the sale of its nationwide unpaired AWS-3 spectrum licenses to SpaceX for about $2.6 billion in SpaceX stock, adding critical capacity to support Starlink’s next-generation Direct to Cell constellation.
When combined with the AWS-4 and H-block spectrum previously acquired from EchoStar, the new frequencies will enhance SpaceX’s capabilities to offer global, affordable satellite-based cellular services for texting, calling, and data coverage in areas where traditional connectivity is lacking.
EchoStar says it will help accelerate new business opportunities without impacting current operations at DISH TV, Sling TV, Boost Mobile, or Hughes.
The transaction is expected to close pending regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions.
By combining access to spectrum with launches provided by SpaceX’s rockets and satellite manufacturing capabilities, the companies aim to expand coverage for both consumers and enterprise users, including Boost Mobile customers.
The deal significantly consolidates mid-band spectrum within SpaceX’s growing telecom ambitions, as Starlink expands direct-to-device services across land and coastal regions.
